The Ukrainian Embassy here on Tuesday arranged a photo exhibition in NUST University to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Holodomor 1932-1933 in Ukraine. In his welcome address, Ambassador of Ukraine to Pakistan Volodymyr Lakomov said that on November 2013 Ukrainians commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Holodomor 1932-1933 in Ukraine.
The Holodomor was a man-made famine in Ukrainian SSR between 1932 and 1933. During the famine millions of Ukrainians died of starvation in a peacetime catastrophe unprecedented in the history of Ukraine, whose number are more than 7 million. He urged that the Soviet government preserved the greatest secrecy concerning the exact number of persons who perished in Ukraine during the famine, but analysis of Soviet census data comparing 1939 with 1926 figures suggest that from 7 million to 10 million men, women, and children were perished and 17 states recognised Holodomor as an act of genocide against the Ukrainian people.
Acting Rector NUST, Mohammad Shahid shared his experience to visit Ukraine and how they preserved their memories for the information of coming generation. He suggested that Pakistan must also preserve such events which could be utilised for the welfare of people. A number of photos were put on display along with video showing the interviews of the victims of Holodomor.
