Apple reportedly ditching 3D touch for new iPhone to save money
Apple might reportedly reveal three new iPhones this year, of which one will be a 6.1-inch model that would have features from iPhone X and iPhone 8. However, new reports suggest that Apple might ditch the 3D touch feature to save money.
Mac Rumors spotted a Chinese website Feng reporting that an analyst from KGI Securities Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the tech giant will use an updated display for its new iPhone that is expected to increase 15% prices from a cost of $23 to $26. Since the new display is expensive, in order to balance out the costs, Apple will remove the 3D Touch feature.
The new 6.1-inch iPhone will use a new ‘Cover Glass Sensor’ (CGS) technology that will permit the display to be lighter and more shock resistant. As per the memo seen by Feng, the touch module will then be moved from the display panel to the surface glass and will have a ‘thin-film sensor’ too, though the exact function of this sensor is not known.
Apple coming out with foldable iPhones soon
Moreover, as per The Verge, the memo also predicts that all of the iPhone models will use the new CGS display in 2019 and 3D Touch might be removed from iPhone altogether in the future. However, this year’s other two iPhones, reportedly the 5.8-inch OLED iPhone X successor and 6.5-inch OLED probably called iPhone X Plus will continue to have 3D Touch feature.
The 3D Touch sensitive technology was exclusively introduced by Apple on iPhone 6s and 6s Plus and it worked using sensors integrated into the display. The technology performed various tasks based on the pressure of the touch. For instance just a light press would do for peeking at a message whereas, a harder press will pop the message for a full view. It also has a lightning fast response.
