Pakistan People's Party has strongly opposed privatisation of state enterprises and termed the government plan anti-people. PPP women wing organised a seminar at the Lahore Press Club on Wednesday against the privatisation process and the economic myths propagated by a powerful conglomerate of industrialists and big business that Pakistan's economy is suffering solely because of an inefficient public sector and that privatisation is the only solution.
Speaking on the occasion, PPP Punjab Manzoor Wattoo and MNA Nafeesa said that State institutions having strategic importance should not be sold." Wattoo said that the government having mentality of businessmen is determined to bring the country at the brink of bankruptcy by selling the State assets, by privatisation of the public sector enterprises. The government leaders want to fill their own coffers and transfer them into the hands of a select few. Nafeesa Shah MNA described the privatisation policy anti-people but PPP was committed to stopping any plans based on the personalisation of the economy. Personalisation under the guise of privatisation must be prevented, she added, The other speakers emphasised that unchecked privatisation will simply result in further perpetuation of private monopolies, cartels, and unemployment, and will take us further away from the desirable goal of equitable growth.
