A parliamentary panel on Wednesday expressed displeasure over one and three years plans proposed by Pakistan Television Network (PTV), suggesting that recommendations of all divisions/channels of PTV should be made part of the proposals for formulation of future plans.
The sub-committee of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting directed that all the channels of PTV should submit their proposals, highlighting measures to be required to bring improvement in their performance. The committee suggested that future plan would be formulated after reviewing the said proposals. The committee also directed that process of appointment of Managing Director (MD) PTV should be expedited.
The Committee, which met with Muhammad Tallal Chaudhry in the chair, expressed dissatisfaction over the presentation given by PTV, as it was not according to the agenda. The committee also directed that the detailed presentation according to the agenda would be given in the next meeting on action taken by PTV to improve the quality of its productions, which included the recommendations for accreditation/affiliation of PTV Academy with any local or international institution / University in its future plans.
The Committee members while expressing serious concern on the poor performance of Division/channels of PTV said that all those channels which are not financially viable and are burden on the PTV must be closed. The committee was told that only PTV Home and PTV Sports are earning, rest of the channels are struggling for their survival.
The committee was told that the PTV had hired 1151 employees during last ten years (2004-2011) and as many as 49 regular employees were fired during the aforementioned period, whereas 104 persons were recruited on temporary basis during the last ten years. MNA Muhammad Azhar Khan Jadoon criticised the performance of the PTV, saying that its performance is not up to the mark, as compared to the private TV channels despite the fact that it is backed by the government. The meeting was attended by MNA Marriyum Aurangzeb, Syed Amir Ali Shah Jamote and Dr Muhammad Azhar Khan Jadoon. The meeting was also attended by the senior officers of Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage and PTV.
