In a bid to ensure transparency in the auction for broad-spectrum 3G and 4G technology, a parliamentary panel recommended on Friday that the auction should be held in presence of media. The National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication also recommended that a policy should be evolved for the manufacturing of 3G and 4 G mobile in the country.
The Committee also directed that the project management board of Special Communications Organisations (SCO) would be reconstructed and political representation should be ensured on the board. The Committee, which met with Captain Muhammad Safdar (Retd) in the chair, discussed the performance of Universal Services Fund (USF), Special Communications Organisations (SCO), Pakistan Software Export Board and budget proposals relating to Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) for year 2014-15.
The committee appreciated the USF for bringing up technology from 3G to 4G and also making efforts for its expansion to 5G to meet the future requirements of the country. It directed USF to provide its services in health and education sectors particularly in far-flung areas so that masses may get its benefits through inter-connectivity with big hospitals of different cities. The Committee recommended that USF may provide 3-G and 4G services to all the universities, cadet colleges and other Institutions of the country.
The Committee also appreciated the performance of SCO in AJK, GB and Northern Areas of the Country and urged the need for the expansion of its services network to FATA and Balochistan. The SCO would be supported if it expands its network to Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the committee added.
