Three female students, who were allegedly locked up in their hostel rooms for around 16 hours by the Islamic University (IU) hostel administration, were rescued on Saturday by a court bailiff and fellow students. The hostel administration had locked up the three students as they were not vacating the rooms despite cancellation of their hostel membership, an official of the university told Business Recorder on condition of anonymity.
Two of the students were freed by their fellow students while father of another girl approached the local court after knowing about the situation. A court bailiff raided the hostel and rescued the other student. One of the female students told this correspondent that their hostel membership was cancelled after they had protested against the warden and provost.
"The warden was imposing unnecessary restrictions on the hostel students; therefore, we had protested against the maltreatment," she said. She said the hostel warden has also threatened other students with dire consequences, if they tried to contact the three students. "We were kept detained in our rooms after we showed stay order to the administration when they came to get the rooms vacated," she said.
The stand-off between the students and the hostel administration started in November last year when new hostel warden and provost were appointed. The students allege that the new hostel administration imposed unnecessary restrictions on them including compulsory charges of Rs 2, 500 for food. The three female students had led a protest demonstration against the warden and the provost and sought their removal. "The administration had cancelled their hostel membership but they got a stay order from a local court," she explained.
On the other hand, the university administration said that stay order of the students expired yesterday that's why they were asked to vacate their rooms. "The students were not confined in their rooms. It is a baseless propaganda against the university administration," one of the university officials said. He said that one of the students had confined herself in the room "to stage this drama" while the two other students peacefully vacated their rooms. Father of one of the students had also approached police for registration of a case against the university administration, but no case was filed till filing of this report.
