The Peshawar High Court on Tuesday declared as illegal the stoppage and examination of Afghanistan-bound cargo trucks by the activists of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and asked the government to take steps towards protection of human and freedom rights.
A two-member bench of PHC comprising Justice Yayha Afridi and Justice Manzoor Hussain, heard a petition filed by a local trader, Haji Lal Mohammad, against the forcible search and examination of Afghanistan-bound cargo trucks by the activists of PTI and its allied parties at Hayatabad Toll plaza Peshawar, for the last three months.
After hearing arguments, the bench said the blockade of goods' supply to Afghanistan, was illegal and unconstitutional under Article 18 of the constitution. The court further said the government should ensure the protection of human and freedom rights. The PHC declared as illegal the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) protests during which party activists blocked Nato supply route in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province and forcibly stopped and searched trucks carrying goods under the Afghan transit trade.
APP adds: The PTI has set up camps at five points in four districts of the province since November 23 last year to block Nato supply line in protest against US drone strikes.
