The workers of Pakistan Railways on Wednesday urged the Federal Minister to step up efforts to stop the department's proposed privatisation besides taking measures to eradicate corruption from the ailing organisation.
"Khwaja Saad Rafiq had assured the workers during his visit to Karachi to remove corrupt officials from the department within six months, instead the crooked officers are being promoted," said Railways Mehnat Kash Union's Karachi Chapter Chairman Abdul Majeed Solangi while talking to Business Recorder. He urged the railways minister to take serious steps to help normalise the department's operation with a view to augmenting its revenue. He was of the view that privatisation was not a solution to the department's financial woes, adding that the ailing department could produce huge revenue if effective policies were implemented.
He further said that the entity could earn huge money, even from the available resources, but unfortunately due to the incompetent bureaucracy it was heading towards bankruptcy.
He alleged that the concerned officials of Karachi Division had given car parking contracts at different railway stations on a throw away price.
He also requested the government to provide basic facilities to the railway workers including health and education.
"Hassan Railway Hospital, Karachi, lacks medicine and other facilities and most of the equipment in the hospital are out of order, but the administration is paying no heed to the issues," he said adding that due to the lack of facilities, thousands of patients were compelled to get treatment in private hospitals.
