Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif will visit Mithi on Monday (today) to have firsthand information about the havoc wreaked in drought-hit areas of Tharparkar, it is learnt. According to the sources, the prime minister has cancelled all other official engagements to assess the volume of disaster and review the relief the have activists have provided to the people in need so far.
The prime minister also directed all the departments concerned to help the famine-affected people on priority basis. The prime minister has also directed the authorities concerned to provide an Mi-17 helicopter to the provincial government for accelerating a rescue and relief operation in famine-hit areas of Tharparkar and airlift the most affected inhabitants.
The prime minister also assured the provincial government of all possible assistance and full co-operation from the Centre to help the needy brethren of drought-hit areas.
On the directives of the prime minister‚ the National Disaster Management Authority is in permanent contact with the Provincial Disaster Management Authority to extend all possible assistance to the affectees.
Senior military officials in Sindh are keeping the PM office abreast of the latest situation in the area.
All the government agencies concerned are providing full scale assistance to the people and doctors and paramedical staff have reached the areas with the necessary drugs to help the Thar affectees.
According to an ISPR press release, the army has established a field hospital to provide healthcare to the malnourished and sick at Diplo. On the first day of the relief operation, 10 tons of relief items were distributed and a total of 613 patients were treated at the medical camp.
General Officer Commanding Hyderabad Garrison, Major General Inam is in the area to oversee the ongoing relief efforts.
Panu Aqil and Karachi garrisons are also gearing up to reinforce relief activities with the help of civil society. Relief camps will also be established at Mithi, Chachhro, Nangarparker, Islamkot and Khinsar. The support will continue till the time crisis situation is normalised.
