PU VC Dr Mujahid Kamran has said that Pakistan could not prosper without allocation of maximum resources to education and creation of new knowledge. He was addressing national conference on "Post 2013 General Elections in Pakistan: Challenges and Options" organised by Punjab University Department of Political Science and Centre for South Asian Studies.
Former Secretary Shamshad Ahmed Khan, renowned political analyst Professor Dr Hasan Askari Rizvi, Professor Dr Mansoor Akber Kundi from Balochistan University, renowned political scientist Dr Anwar A Syed, Dr Z A Hilali from University of Peshawar, PU Chairperson Department of Political Science Professor Dr Umbreen Javed, faculty members and a large number of students were present on the occasion.
Dr Mujahid Kamran said that Pakistan was spending around 2 or less than 2 percent of GDP on education in the past, which is estimated around 5 billion dollars, while India was spending 4 percent of its GDP on education, around 48 billion dollars. He said that we must raise standard of education because knowledge was source of wealth and power.
Shamshad Ahmed Khan said that Pakistan's problems were internal which should be solved internally. He said that Pakistan had more challenges and fewer options. He said that elections were not the name of democracy otherwise dictators were elected with 99 percent majority vote. He said that independent elections were a must for the democracy which could deliver. He said that 2013 elections in Pakistan had created hope among the people and the rulers must take hard decisions to measure up their expectations. He said that the country was facing the challenges in terms of economy, energy and security and fortunately there were positive symptoms but still inflation was out of control and foreign debts were increasing. He said that we needed an independent foreign policy according to the vision of Quaid-i-Azam. He said that elections could not bring change but change in system could bring real change.
Dr Hasan Askari Rizvi said that after elections, there were some successes but there were problems as well which should be understood as challenge and should be resolved. He said that democracy was not the guarantee to the solution but it provided an environment where problems could be resolved. He said that the challenge of democracy was to ensure good governance and deliver.
