Traffic police on Friday informed the Sindh High Court (SHC) that so far 7,623 vehicles with substandard gas cylinders were fined and around 648 vehicles impounded. DIG Traffic submitted a report before division bench in response to court direction regarding removal of substandard gas cylinders and CNG fittings from the public transport.
Regional Transport Authority (RTA) in a report said that it also took action against public transport vehicles with illegal cylinders. It said that many vehicles were fined and cylinders were removed.
The report said that drivers of school vans and public transport vehicles were issued strict warnings to remove illegal cylinders from the vehicles. Rana Faizul Hassan, representing the NGO, submitted that several people had lost their lives due to the use of substandard gas cylinders in public transport, but the authorities concerned failed to take action against such traffic violations. He prayed to the court to order removal of substandard cylinders, and government-verified cylinders/CNG kits be used by public and private transport to prevent accidents.
