LAHORE: Lahore Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI) on Saturday urged the government to improve power transmission and distribution system with its own resources to avoid frequent power outages.

LCCI President Malik Tahir Javaid stated here that the country had witnessed some massive power shutdowns that plunged the country into darkness.

While citing the example of Bhikki Power Plant of 1180-MW, he said it was a good sign that the government was well aware of the rising demand of electricity and working on a number of power projects day and night, but there was a need to also improve the existing power distribution system that could not bear the load of additional power.

He urged the government not to tolerate any laxity towards upgradation of power transmission and distribution system as any negligence could cause unbearable loss to the trade, industry and economy.

LCCI President also urged the government to ensure early completion of ongoing power projects as it was necessary to keep the industrial wheel moving and economic growth was also linked with sufficient and cheap energy.

Senior Vice President Khawaja Khawar Rashid and Vice President Zeshan Khalil said that economic well-being was a must, asserting that unemployment and industrial closures always give birth to lawlessness and anarchy.

They claimed that private sector was the engine of growth and in the developed countries it was facilitated to the maximum.
