The run of the rivers water increased by 44,000 cusecs during past 24 hours following rains in the catchments areas of the Indus, Kabul, Jhelum and Chenab rivers raising prospects of early filling of the upgraded Mangla dam on river Jhelum and Tarbela dam on the mighty Indus.
According to the 8th April report of WAPDA, regarding position of the river inflows/outflows and the reservoirs levels, the water inflows in the river Chenab at Marala head-works near Sialkot has increased from Monday's 28,000 cusecs to 54,400 cusecs. The Indus River System authority was putting all the run of the river water into the irrigation canal network from Marala head-works up to Panjnad canal regulatory facility near Sindh border.
The water flow in the Jhelum River has shot up from 41,000 cusecs to 52,200 cusecs during past twenty four hours. The water regulatory body is retaining 52,200 cusecs water in the Mangla dam and releasing 30,000 cusecs downstream the reservoir for irrigation and hydel power generation purposes.
The water level in the Mangla dam has risen by almost 100 ft from its dead level of 1040 ft with the storage of 1.7 MAF water. The other live river Kabul which contributes about 17 percent water to the national water economy is running with 69,500 cusecs water that is merging in the river Indus near Attock Bridge on GT road for downward irrigation and drinking purposes.
