Declaring the decision of the Election Tribunal as null and void, the Supreme Court on Thursday restored the National Assembly membership of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf candidate from FATA Qaiser Jamal. A two-member bench of Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani heard the case relating to the eligibility of the PTI candidate.
The PTI candidate was elected from NA 47 (FATA) but his election was challenged by an independent candidate Abdur Rehman before an Election Tribunal. The tribunal declared the victory of Qaiser Jamal as void and ordered fresh elections in the constituency. Declaring the tribunal's decision illegal, the Supreme Court restored the PTI leader as an MNA for NA-47 and issued notices to parties in the matter. The hearing of case was adjourned for two weeks.
Meanwhile, a three-member bench led by Justice Jawwad S Khawaja dismissed the plea that had challenged the candidature of Leader of Opposition National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah. The apex court had issued notice to Shah in response to a petition of Muslim League Functional's Anayatullah who was his opponent on NA-199 Sukkur.
