Pakistan and the United States discussed bilateral economic co-operation, when US Deputy National Security Advisor (NSA) for International Economic Affairs Caroline Atkinson called on Minister for Commerce Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan. Atkinson referred to the successful visit of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to the United States for talks with President Barack Obama last year, and the resolve of the two leaders to work together on a range of options to enable Pakistan to achieve a positive economic growth.
The Joint Action plan had been developed towards the realisation of this resolve. She expressed the United States keen desire to work jointly with Pakistan to implement the strategy devised for the purpose. Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir, who is in Washington for Trade and Investment Framework Agreement Council meeting, briefed the US official on the Pakistan's efforts towards promoting international trade and investment, a pivot around which Pakistan seeks to devise its economic development and poverty alleviation strategies.
Trade, he emphasised, is the centrepiece of Islamabad's vision to fight violent extremism, saying through economic and political empowerment of the people of Pakistan, the country can defeat this menace. Promoting closer economic relations and expanded trade and investment opportunities would lend greater strength and sustainability to the strategic relationship between our two countries and help in realising some of the shared objectives; including promotion of enduring stability in the region, the Minister said.
