A Pakistani Senior Research scholar and Industrial Economist, Dr Talat Mahmood has been elected as the Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Asia-Pacific Forum, Berlin (APFB) in its Annual General Meeting held here on Saturday. The organisation works under the patronage of the Federal President of Germany, while several Federal Ministers as well as members of top management from other disciplines constitute the advisory board. Dr Talat Mahmood is one of the founding members of the APFB and longtime Chairman of the Pakistan Forum within the APFB.
Newly elected Vice President, Dr Mahmood is presently associated as a Senior Fellow with the Social Sciences Research Centre (WZB) Berlin. He is currently researching German-Pakistani bilateral relations, international migration and the impact of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) on Pakistan's economy. He has taught as an industrial economist at several universities and published a number of papers in international journals.
For APFB, he has been particularly involved in the organisation and conceptualization of the biennial "Pakistan Business Days", an integral component of the Asia-Pacific Week (APW) and regularly attended by high-level delegations from the corporate and political world from both regions. Within the context of the most recent Asia-Pacific Weeks Berlin 2013, the "Pakistan Business Days" discussed matters of the post-election political-economic scene following Pakistan's General Elections of May 2013. He has also recently hosted the lecture series "Understanding Pakistan," aimed at to foster scientific debate among university students and academics and to represent Pakistan in the larger German public.
The upcoming Asia-Pacific Weeks Berlin (May 18th to May 29th, 2015) will focus on the concept of "Smart Cities" and the urban challenges faced by metropolitan areas as Berlin and growing cities in the Asia-Pacific region alike. For Pakistan too, this exchange on topics like renewable energies, water scarcity and pollution, sustainability and resource management in the context of increasing urbanisation will prove to be particularly relevant.
