Member Managing Committee, Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Hasnain Sheikh Vohra, has urged the government to make Customs appraisers and deputy commissioners accountable at all levels. He was of the view that when traders and consignees are made accountable then why the Customs appraisers and deputy commissioners remained unaccountable.
Referring to a report of the KCCI Customs and Valuation sub-committee, he suggested to the government to punish and take legal action against all those appraisers and deputy commissioners who are indulging in unlawful practices. Accusing the Customs valuation department of not giving importance to the suggestions put forth by traders and importers, he said that the guidelines of Customs be implemented in letter and spirit.
The sub-committee's chairman, Muhammad Saqib, drew the attention towards two major issues relating to valuation guideline of 133 items and net and gross-weight issues which, he added, were excessively being charged by the Customs.
