The Federal government on Tuesday challenged the Islamabad High court decision of May 17, 2014 that had reinstated Muhammad Zaka Ashraf as Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman. Senior advocate Supreme Court Asma Jehangir filed a petition on behalf of Federal Ministry of Inter-Provincial Co-ordination under Article 185 (3) of the Constitution for leave to appeal against the IHC judgement.
Acting Chief Justice Nasirul Mulk fixed the federation's petition for hearing. A three-member bench of Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali will hear the matter on Wednesday (today). Asma urged the apex court to restore the PCB's Management Committee along with Najam Sethi as its Chairman, saying the IHC has annulled February 10, 2014 notification in utter violation of the Supreme Court judgements.
She further submitted that the impugned judgement has throughout erroneously termed the Management Committee (MC) as Interim MC, whereas the patron had set up the MC to clean up the PCB swiftly which was urgently required to uphold financial integrity and governance. The petitioner said that several reforms were under way. "By declaring all acts of the MC that are "long term" the judgement has struck a fatal blow to the PCB and Cricket, which will cost PCB heavily in terms of financial loss and credibility in International Cricket," the federal government submitted.
