The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) is going to file a reference against M/s Karkey in the accountability court in the multibillion Rental Power Plants (RPPs) scam by the end of this week. "The NAB executive board has approved the filing of a reference gainst M/s Karkey (through its directors), government officials and public office holders on May 7 and the bureau has almost fulfilled all legal formalities for filing a reference in the accountability court," said NAB spokesman Ramzan Sajid.
He said that after getting an approval from the executive board, the preparation of the case for filing a reference in the court required six to seven days. The NAB's prosecution wing has completed its work and will file the reference against Karkey by the end of this week, he said. The NAB spokesman further said that once a reference is approved by the board, the bureau will proceed with the directives.
Another NAB official said the bureau has planned to file 12 references in a multibillion scam of RPPs. Out of 12, the bureau has so far filed three references and the fourth will be filed very soon. The NAB had already arrested three accused namely N A Zuberi, Managing Director, Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) from Islamabad and two former CEOs of Lakhra Power Generation Company Limited (LPGCL - GENCO) Anwar Brohi and Muhammad Jamil from Karachi, he said.
An agreement was signed between M/s Karkey and Lakhra Power Generation Company Limited (LPGCL). The suspects are accused of causing a huge loss to national exchequer by extending undue favour/benefit to M/s Karkey. In this case an amount of $128 million with mark-up (due from Karkey as determined by Supreme Court of Pakistan) and Rs 792.7 million (on account of miscellaneous infrastructure cost) are to be recovered from the sponsors and various government functionaries.
