The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is yet to reach out to the enraged provincial leadership in Sindh province, after the party's parliamentary leader in the Provincial Assembly warned that they would announce their future strategy on Saturday in case their reservations were not addressed. Talking to Business Recorder over the phone from Karachi, Irfanullah Khan Marwat, parliamentary leader of the PML-N in Sindh Assembly, said that the central leadership has not yet contacted him or any other party leader in the province.
This is after Marwat publicly warned the party leadership that its Sindh chapter would decide its own line of action if the central leadership failed to respond to their grievances by Saturday. "It would be inappropriate to give any statement prior to the expiry of our ultimatum on Saturday, but I can tell you that no one from the centre has contacted me or any other member so far," the seemingly upset Marwat said, adding that he would announce a future line of action on Saturday.
He, however, said that the party workers are very disappointed at the indifferent attitude of the central leadership. Marwat on Monday expressed serious displeasure at Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif 'ignoring' the party's Sindh leadership during his recent visit to Karachi, and warned that the party's MPAs would either sit on the treasury benches or sit as independent candidates in the provincial assembly if their reservations were not addressed.
Talking to a number of office bearers of the PML-N Sindh chapter, it was revealed that there is growing demand for action among the party workers due to what is perceived as the central leadership's indifference. According to them, the party workers worked day and night to re-organise the party in Sindh province, which is regarded as a stronghold of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and currently the PML-N has a total of 10 MPAs in the provincial assembly, three of them elected from Karachi.
"This is not only happening in Sindh, our workers in Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and even in Punjab are feeling neglected," said Aslam Khattak, PML-N's general-secretary for district central, Karachi. However, he acknowledged that the central leadership is busy addressing major issues confronting the nation like militancy, energy crisis and economy.
To address the reservations of the party's Sindh chapter the central leadership indicated that it would constitute a committee to resolve the crisis but Khattack added that the body could not be formed so far. PML-N central-secretary information Mushahidullah Khan, however, was not available for comments despite repeated telephone calls and text messages on his cell phone.
With coming into power after the May 11, 2013 general elections, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif publicly announced his intent to re-organise the party in Sindh - a province which remains the stronghold of rival PPP in rural areas and MQM in cities. However, the first major fissure in the party emerged with the resignation of more than 200 office bearers at the district and tehsil levels soon after their provincial president Syed Ghous Ali Shah quit the party in August last year in protest against the selection of Mamnoon Hussain as President of Pakistan. The party's other leaders in the province including Ayaz Shah Shirazi and Ghulam Murtaza Jatoi had earlier protested against what they claimed was Prime Minister's indifferent attitude towards them.
