The Lahore High Court here on Thursday directed Punjab government to submit four-year audit reports of all union councils in the province along with income and expenditure details. The court passed this order in several petitions challenging recovery of urban property tax under Local Government Ordinance.
In this case, secretary local government had defended the tax recovery, however, Excise department claimed its authority to recover the impugned tax. Secretary local government further said that the impugned tax being recovered to meet expenses of Town Municipal Administration.
The court adjourned the hearing for a month and directed the government to submit audit, income and expenditure details of all UCs in the province. The petitioners had pleaded that the local government was illegally recovering urban property tax. They said Excise department was already recovering the same tax. Therefore, one could not be subjected to dual tax.
