The Pakistan Business Council (PBC) in a statement issued recently has strongly supported early privatisation of Stated Owned Enterprises (SOEs). The PBC is of the view that most of the SOEs are losing money and, that even the profitable ones are underperforming.
"The SOEs are a major drain on the public exchequer with the quality levels of their service delivery needing major improvements which would not be possible unless they are privatised", the PBC statement mentioned. Without commenting on the mechanics of the privatisation process, the PBC has urged the government to develop a privatisation strategy for each entity which takes into cognisance the dynamics of the industry in which a particular SOE operates in. The PBC statement closes with a request to the government to ensure that the privatisation process is expeditiously carried out in a transparent manner - SOEs for privatisation be clearly identified and time lines set for them.-PR
