Former France star Just Fontaine will receive a belated Golden Boot for his single-tournament record of 13 goals scored at the 1958 World Cup at the FIFA Congress in Sao Paulo on June 11, he announced Thursday. "At the time, the "Golden Boot", didn't yet exist. Adidas invented it later.
That's why Fifa have now decided to give it to me 56 years later, because my 13 goals at a lone World Cup still remains unique, at least until July 13," said Fontaine, now aged 80. Fontaine, who was part of the great Reims sides of the late 1950s and early 1960s, achieved his remarkable goal haul in just six matches, helping France to a third-placed finish at the finals in Sweden.
While his record for goals in a single tournament still stands, Fontaine's overall mark has since been surpassed. German duo Gerd Muller and Miroslav Klose both have 14 World Cup goals to their names and the latter, who is in Joachim Loew's squad for the finals in Brazil, is just one shy of Brazilian striker Ronaldo's all-time record of 15.
