Adonis Stevenson survived a knockdown to retain his World Boxing Council light heavyweight title with a unanimous decision over Andrzej Fonfara on Saturday. Canadian southpaw Stevenson, who was born in Haiti, put his explosive power on display in the first round. Poland's Fonfara came out on the attack, but was sent to the canvas by a Stevenson straight left to the chin in the opening frame.
Stevenson battered Fonfara for the remainder of the round, but the challenger was able to regroup over the next three rounds before Stevenson sent him down again in the fifth with a punishing body blow. Fonfara began to turn things his way in the eighth against an apparently tiring Stevenson, and sent the champion down with a right hand in the ninth.
