The Lahore High Court Bar Association here on Monday urged all state institutions to remain in their constitutional limits and avoid any extra constitutional act. The bar also demanded of all television channels to refrain from airing controversial programmes that could hurt sentiments. Some of the members preset at the meeting asked the bar president to also make a demand for a ban on Geo television. Another group of lawyers stood up and started shouting slogans against ARY demanding a ban on both channels.
The bar's president unsuccessfully struggled, to maintain calm in the house as both the groups continued to shout at each other; they even came to blows over their disagreement. The meeting was adjourned amid growing disorder and chaos before the members of the bar left the hall.
The bar president, Shafqat Mahmood Chohan, said the bar believed in independence of the judiciary and will not allow any one to seize that independence. Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) also passed a resolution and declared that the bar upheld the freedom of expression and independence of judiciary.
A press release issued by the PBC said, it took a serious notice of the recent "abhorrent and distasteful" attempts made by certain media groups in maligning the judiciary in general and some particular judges in particular. It said these distasteful attacks on judiciary pointed to some mala fide motive that should be inquired by the government; and the persons responsible should be taken to task.
