Pakistan Kisan Ittehad (PKI) staged a rally on Monday and urged the concerned authorities for acceptance of their demands. The rally was led by PKI Central President Chaudhry Muhammad Anwar, Chaudhry Muhammad Ramzan and Rao Qadeer. PKI demanded supply of best quality seed and fertilisers on reasonable rates, sales tax withdrawal and further tax withdrawal on tractors and farm implements, agricultural loans should be issued merely on four percent service charges and subsidies should not be withdrawn.
They also demanded for increasing the support prices of sugarcane, wheat, maize, rice and cotton to compensate the farmers. They said the government has recently imposed GIDC which will increase fertilizer prices by Rs 400 to 450 per bag, which should be withdrawn.
PKI also demanded increase credit allocation for agriculture sector by 50 percent and mark-up on agriculture loan should be only KIBOR plus two percent, imports of agriculture produce and products should not be allowed from Wagha land route without developing level playing field. PKI recommended government to make special and concerted efforts to develop consensus on Kalabagh Dam, complete Thal Canal to irrigate the dry lands, Katchi Canal for Southern Punjab, Balochistan and Raini Canal Ghotki Sukkur and Khanpur districts of Sindh province during floods.
