Federal Minister for Pakistan Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique has said that the department had initiated a project in collaboration with Punjab Urban Unit (PUU) to computerise railways land record. He was talking to media persons after attending the meeting of Standing Committee on Railway on Monday at Railway Headquarters chaired by Syed Naveed Qamar. The committee discussed matters pertaining to railway land encroachment across the country and any previous item from the last meeting.
The minister said that certain areas like revamping of legal department, ongoing targeted operations and to purse pending cases in courts should seriously be focused to improve the working of the department.
He informed the committee about steps taken by the department to stop the recurrence of encroachment on railway land. He suggested that sub-committees should be formed for a quick solution to different issues related to railways. The minister said that PR would get over Rs 39 billion as its budget and hoped that the department would meet all its requirements from the amount. The chairman asked the department to hold a meeting after three months to brief it about expenditures. PR Police IG Ibne Hussain said that 688 persons were arrested on charges of encroachment on railway lands. Locomotives Chief Mechanical Engineer (CME) Tariq Khan also briefed about the working of locomotives imported from China.
Later, Syed Naveed Qamar while talking to the media after visiting Loco shop at Mughalpura said that 14 engines had arrived from China and they would start working smoothly within their warranty period. He said that Chinese engineers had reached Pakistan and more would come soon to monitor the functioning of the locos and remove minor problems.
To a question, Naveed Qamar said that a committee had been formed to monitor the working of the railways above party politics. He also welcomed the prime minister's visit to India. The Standing Committee was attended by Chairman Syed Naveed Qamar and Members Sardar Muhammad Irfan Dogar, Syed Muhammad Saqlain Bukhari, Rasheed Ahmad Khan, Syed Muhammad Ashiq Hussain, Dr Nisar Ahmad Jutt, Rai Mansab Ali Khan, Ramesh Lal, Eng Hamid-ul-Haq Khalil, Amjad Ali Khan, Syed Asif Hasnain, Naseema Hafeez, Sajid Hussain Toori.
