Members of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Communications have urged the Sindh government for early release of land so that remaining portion of Lyari Expressway can be completed in time. This was stated by Chairman Standing Committee of the Lower House on Communications, Sufyan Yousaf, while presiding over a high level meeting at the Regional Headquarter NHA Karachi, says a press release issued here on Monday.
On this occasion, all the ten members of Standing Committee of the Lower House, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmad, Chairman NHA Shahid Ashraf Tarrar, Member Admn NHA Usman Akhtar Bajwa, FWO Representative and Karachi Administration were also present.
A detailed briefing was given to Standing Committee of the Lower House on Lyari Expressway and Karachi above Motorway (M 9). The committee was told that Lyari Expressway has two parts ie, South-bound and North-bound. The South-bound is already complete, while 9.5 kilometres out of the 16 kilometres of the North-bound is reach, whereas the rest of the portion is incomplete due to non-availability of land by the Sind government.
It was clarified that there was no delay from the NHA side and the remaining incomplete portion can be completed within 12 months once land has been allocated for it by the Provincial Government.
The Standing Committee of the Lower House urged the provincial government to immediately provide land for the said portion so that it can be timely completed. The Chairman Standing Committee of the Lower House and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs while highlighting the significance of Lyari Expressway Project, said that its completion will facilitate traffic from Sohrab Goth to Mari Pur and will also boost trade activities on Karachi Port that will ultimately strengthen the province's and the country's economy, they added.
The committee was told that the Karachi-Lahore Motorway (M-9) will minimize distances and will provide world class travel facilities and will boost economic activities in the country. Chairman NHA, Shahid Ashraf Tarrar assured the members of the committee that work will start on the project as soon as the required land has been allocated for the said portion of the project. Later on, the members of the committee, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, and other officials visited the site of the project and inspected the construction work.
The Standing Committee urged the provincial government for the early release of land and the federal government for the release of funds for the project stating that its completion will fulfil a longstanding demand of the people of the area and will facilitate access to Karachi Port that will boost trade activities.-PR
