Among 300 schools closed in Sindh, drought-affected Tharparkar and Umerkot districts topped the list with 101 schools whereas provincial chief minister's home district - Khairpur Mirs - stood second with 37 schools. According to an initial list of all the closed schools compiled by Reform Support Unit (RSU), former president Asif Ali Zardari's home district maintained third position as the number of closed schools in Shaheed Benazirabad tehsils - Qazi Ahmed, Sakrand and Daur - stood at 36.
Sources said that Sindh's Senior Minister for Education Nisar Ahmed Khuhro has already directed officials of the department to expedite the wok aimed at re-opening the closed schools and, as such, a list of these schools would be given to Sindh Education Foundation (SEF) for re-opening the closed-schools. The department through advertisements had asked the individuals and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to apply for adopting such public sector schools.
The sources said that the SEF has included 300 closed schools in its Integrated Education Learning Programme (IELP) under which some 1,000 primary, elementary and secondary schools were already being run in various districts of the province. According to the official list of closed schools, a copy of which is available with Business Recorder, existed in Tharparkar, Umerkot, Khairpur Mirs, Dadu, Jamshoro, Shaheed Benazirabad, Tando Mohammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, Thatta, Naushehro Feroze, Badin, Matiari, Ghotki, Kashmore-Kandhkot, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Qambar-Shahdadkot and Sanghar.
