Workers of Pakistan Railways on Tuesday criticised the federal budget FY2014-15, saying that the organisation could be brought back to its past glory only by eradicating corruption from it. Commenting on the federal finance minister's announcement concerning an allocation of some Rs 77 billion for various development schemes and for the Railways employees' pay and pension, Railway Mazdoor Union's Malik Muqaddar Zaman said that Railways was not going to witness any positive change unless incompetent officials were removed from the organisation.
He said that although the government has apparently earmarked a significant amount for mechanisation of track maintenance, replacement and improvement of signalling system and provision of a centralised traffic control system, the chances of proper utilisation of the funds was impossible. He also criticised the management of the Railways for not generating income despite having capacity to generate reasonable income form the resources available to it.
