The Sui-Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) will add 120 Million Cubic Feet per Day (MMCFD) of additional gas to the system within next few months. According to official sources in the company, within next couple of days SSGCL is to connect Zarghoon Gas Field located in Bolan block, Balochistan with the main pipeline which previously was delayed due to some land acquisition issues.
"We have completed all the arrangements of connecting the gas field with main pipeline and now it is up to Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL), which is the operator of the field when it will start supplying gas, but both SSGCL and MPCL are likely to start supplying gas to the citizens of Quetta from June 15, 2014. We have laid a gas pipeline of 64 kilometres in the area," the official maintained.
Within next few months SSGC will complete Jhal Magsi Gas Pipeline project, which will add 15 Mmcfd of gas into the system and an additional 90 MMCFD of gas is expected from Badin Gas Field, the official said. Mari Gas Company Limited (MGCL), with 35 percent interest, is the operator of Zarghoon Gas Field located in the Bolan block. The MGCL entered into the Zarghoon South Gas Sales and Purchase Agreement (GSPA) eight years ago with Sui-Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGC) in August 2006.
According to the agreement, the Bolan Venture will supply 25 MMCFD of pipeline quality gas to the SSGC. The gas reserves, estimated at 93 billion cubic feet, are expected to last for 15 years.. For bringing the gas into the system, the company is laying about 64 kilometer long gas pipeline of 12 inches diameters, which will be connected to Quetta transmission system.
The government is focused on increasing local gas production by seven percent or by 315 Million Cubic Feet per Day (MMCFD) by the end of December 2014. As per officials, the additional gas will be added to the system from following reservoirs: (i) up to 100 MMCFD additional gas is expected from Latif Gas Field, (ii) 18 MMCFD from Mehar Gas Field, (iii) 25 MMCFD from Zarghoon Gas Field, (iv) 150 MMCFD from OGDCL, and (v) MOL is set to enhance its gas production by 50 MMCFD from Tal Block.
Gas is playing a major role in Pakistan's energy mix as it is used by households and power houses, but with limited supplies the government has to resort to gas load-management plan. At present, gas supply to CNG stations remain suspended for five days a week. Gas supply to CNG stations in Sindh remain suspended for 3 days a week, while in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa there is no gas load shedding for CNG or industrial sectors.
The power sector is utilising a total of 1000 MMCFD out of total production of 4.3BCFD; as per officials by the end of ongoing year an estimated 500 MMCFD gas would be brought into the system by gas/oil Exploration and Production (E&P) companies including Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL) and others.
