Industrial activities in the city remained paralysed for the second day as the workers of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) continued their protest on Wednesday against the arrest of party chief Altaf Hussain in London. A strike-like situation prevailed in the city with the MQM workers continuing their sit-in at Numaish Chowrangi. The absence of labour due to non-availability of public transport was one of the reasons behind low industrial productivity, while the goods transports also remained off the roads.
Some industrial units, however, remained operative as the workers living nearby areas turned up but the production could reach optimum level. Some industrial units did not allow their night shift workers to go home to keep their units operational to meet export and local orders, industrialists said. Businesses, commercial centres, shops, petrol pumps and CNG stations remained closed while educational institutes in the city also stayed closed.
