Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) workers and supporters continued their sit-in for the second consecutive at Numaish Chowrangi to express solidarity with their party chief Altaf Hussain over his arrest by police in London. On Wednesday, leaders of different political parties, civil society organisation and business community also visited the protest camp to show solidarity with MQM.
Addressing the protestors, MQM leader Farooq Sattar said that the party would continue its protests until the government did not obtain a guarantee from British authorities that their party chief, who had been arrested by the UK police, would be protected. The MQM leader said Altaf Hussain's health was their biggest concern at the moment.
He also said that no charges had been framed against MQM chief as yet, adding that detention without charges contradicted the tenets of justice. Sattar said nobody could be arrested for questioning in Britain. He also refuted the news that Altaf Hussain's bail application had been rejected, saying that it was simply a baseless rumour. He said lawyers representing Altaf would submit a bail application.
Sindh Education Minister Nisar Khuhro and other PPP leader also visited the protest camp to express solidarity with Altaf Hussain. "We are here to express solidarity with our companion - Altaf Hussain and it is our responsibility to support each other in difficult times in order to salvage the democracy," he said, while addressing protestors. He urged the Britain authorities to ensure better medical facilities to MQM leader. Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) leaders MPA Jam Madad Ali and Pir Yasir Pagara also visited MQM's camp. They extended their full support to MQM's chief Altaf Hussain and workers.
Prominent businessman Siraj Qasim Teli said that MQM workers were facing difficult time and Altaf Hussain needed prayers. President All Karachi Tajir Ittehad Atiq Mir said Altaf Hussain is the sign of country's solidarity and prosperity. "Gross injustice is being meted out to Altaf Hussian," he added.
