Like other parts of the globe, "World Day against Child Labour" was observed here on Thursday with a renewed pledge to continue efforts aimed at elimination of child labour through raising awareness among people about the plight and rights of child labourers. With the theme of "Extend social protection: combat child labour," seminars, walks, and other events were held in which speakers highlighted different aspects of child labour.
Addressing a seminar in Lahore, Pakistan Baitul Mal (PBM) Managing Director, Barrister Abid Waheed Sheikh said PBM is playing leading role for the elimination of child labour from the country, however, other NGOs should also come forward to play their due role in this regard. He said the standard of educational centres of child labourers working under the control of PBM has been raised to middle level.
Another seminar was also conducted at the office of NGO at Iqbal Avenue. The participants presented a resolution in which, it was demanded to consider domestic child labour as a prohibited profession. On this occasion, Nazir Ahmed Ghazi shared the historical background of the day. He drew attention of the participants on the negative aspects of Domestic Child Labour and shared the background of ill treatment being done with the children which is causing physical and mental illness and cause of their deaths. He demanded ban on child domestic labour and expressed utmost displeasure over the government's inefficiency in this regard.
