Unilever Pakistan Limited and the Schools Education Department, Punjab have signed a joint declaration to drive health and hygiene awareness through school curriculum. The declaration was signed during the inauguration of Unilever Sustainability Conference 2014, which highlighted Unilever's progress in creating a healthier Pakistan.
Over 2,000 children die every day as a result of diarrhoea caused by unsafe water, poor sanitation and a lack of hygiene. These deaths are preventable and Unilever is committed towards creating a bright future by improving hygiene practices as part of the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan. Unilever, through its brand Lifebuoy has already reached out to 14 million consumers since the launch of the Sustainable Living Plan in Pakistan with the important message of hand washing with soap five times daily. This is the easiest, single most cost effective way to prevent diarrhoea and respiratory disease. The company now wants to include more partners in this vision to amplify the movement for behaviour change starting with children as ambassadors for a bright future.
During the conference, Unilever Pakistan also committed to providing the Schools Education Department Punjab with technical advice to include messages on health and hygiene in school curriculum towards creating a healthier Pakistan. Unilever's commitment towards creating increased awareness for a healthier lifestyle is a collaborative effort with partners including Oxfam GB, Save the Children, Unicef, Plan International, World Food Programme and Idara-e-Taleem-o-Agahi.
Minister for Schools Education Department Punjab, Rana Mashood Ahmed Khan while addressing the conference said, "I am glad to support this initiative to drive health and hygiene awareness through our schools in order to create a far reaching and long term impact."
