Prolonged and unannounced loadshedding being resorted to by K-Electric in the current hot and sultry weather has given boost to the sale of generators and uninterrupted power supply (UPS). Taking undue advantage of the situation, dealers of generators and the UPS have been fleecing both the domestic and commercial consumers by charging exorbitant rates.
The average price in the market for a generator of 1Kv generator ranges between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000; 3Kv generator (between Rs 39000 and Rs 40,000; 3.5Kv generator (between Rs 44000 and Rs 45,000; 5Kv generator (between Rs 72,000 and Rs 300,000 and 6Kv generator (between Rs 750,000 Rs 900, 000, depending on their quality and make. The accessories like gas kit and batteries are also included in these prices, while change-over switch is available for Rs 1500 and automatic switch (ATS) was available between Rs 8000 to Rs 5000. During a survey of the market, it was noticed that sale of generators, UPS and batteries have increased in the city as people are going for alternative modes of electricity to overcome massive loadshedding and frequent power outages.
Though the prices were so high, people have no option but to arrange alternative energy sources to get some relief from 6 to 18 hours announced and unannounced loadshedding. Generator and UPS dealers did not hesitate in admitting that their business has flourished since advent of summer season in the city. Meanwhile, demand for the locally manufactured UPS has also gone high whereas the demand for Chinese UPS was registering a downward trend owing to its high cost as well as repair charges. Some dealers are offering six months to one year guarantee for generators and UPS, while others are not ready to offer guarantee.
