Patients of Thyroid cancer have voiced their concern over non-availability of Thyroxin in the market. This was stated by Dr Khalid Nawaz, President Pakistan Society of Nuclear Medicine while talking to media persons. Such patients are at despair as they go from one pharmacy to another to find this essential life-saving medicine and its deficiency in the body results in low pulse rate, he said.
The doctor further warned that deficiency of thyroxin in pregnant women could cause hindrance in the child's growth which in most of the cases results in premature deliveries and mental retardation. While in old people, he added, it could cause death. He said the thyroid patients are suffering due to its non-availability as smuggled Thyroxin is shortly available in the market at very high price thus making it out of the reach of majority of patients. He has urged the government and health department to take necessary measures to make available an essential medicine to overcome the problem being faced by the patients.
