Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said that road link between Pakistan and Tajikistan through Wakhan corridor could further improve the economic relations while the other regional countries will also benefit due to better connectivity and rise in economic activities in the region.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif held a meeting with his Tajik counterpart Qahir Rasulzada in the state guest house in Dushanbe. Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif, Minister for Textile Abbas Khan Afridi and Special Assistant to PM Tariq Fatimi also attended the meeting.
Meeting reviewed the bilateral co-operation in trade, energy and communication sector. While exploring the economic opportunities, both sides observed that the bilateral trade between two countries has increased from 15 million dollars in 2011 to the highest level of 93 million dollars in 2013. "There is much more scope to increase the bilateral trade", both the Prime Minister's agreed.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif offered Tajikistan to use Pakistani seaports for its imports and exports and added that it will facilitate promotion of the economic relations. Nawaz Sharif expressed his government's commitment for early realisation of CASA-1000 project. Import of 1000MW of electricity will help mitigate electricity deficit in Pakistan and strengthen energy security, PM added. Prime Minister said that Pakistan attaches great importance to cordial relations with Tajikistan and consider Tajikistan a key partner for peace, security and stability in the region. The Prime Minister further stated that, "I look forward to participating in the forth coming SCO Summit at Dushanbe. I am confident that Tajikistan will support Pakistan's full membership of SCO."
