The Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned till today (Thursday) the proceedings of a contempt of court petition pertaining to non-payment of salaries to lady health workers. A three-member bench headed by Justice Jawad S Khawaja heard the petition filed by Bushra Arian. During the course of proceedings, the court directed Advocate General Balochistan to submit evidence about the payment of salaries to lady health workers by Thursday.
The court was told that there was no issue of salaries against the provincial governments of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as they have cleared all the outstandings to the LHWs. The court was informed that an ordinance has been issued by the Sindh government pertaining to the regularisation of LHWs, on which the bench ordered to produce the copy of the ordinance.
About the payment of salaries to LHWs in Balochistan, the court was told that the provincial government had paid salaries till March 2014, while the remaining dues would be paid soon. Bushra Arain contended that not a single province except Punjab had paid salaries, adding the statements from the respective provinces about timely payment of salaries was misleading. Additional Attorney General Sajid Ilyas Bhatti apprised the court that the federal government had paid salaries to LHWs. The hearing of case was adjourned till Thursday.
