Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) has been ranked 1st in Pakistan and 106th in Asian Universities in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking of 2014. The QS is an established authority on global provider of specialist higher education and careers information and solutions since 1990. It is the first time that any Pakistani University has reached this position.
PIEAS, competing for the first time in the QS Asian rankings, scored highest points amongst all the Pakistani participating universities. Addressing the celebration ceremony of PIEAS, Ansar Parvez chairman Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) said the government's investment in the education sector and especially in the sciences field was encouraging.
"Young educated people can play a pivotal role in the development of the country and the role of Higher Education Commission (HEC) is very important by providing high standards", Pervaz added. He further said that PIEAS need to work hard and prove its metal of excellence in the world to attract foreign students here. To recognise the efforts of PIEAS employees in achieving position among the top universities of the Asia, PAEC chairman announced a bonus, equal to one month salary.
Chairman HEC Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said that Pakistan deserve a better and bright future while people and institutions like PIEAS and PAEC in hands. HEC is committed to support PIEAS in its every effort for brining innovations in the field of education. Dr Mukhtar further said that the Commission is focusing on upgrading the quality and quantity of education on schools and colleges level by engaging 158 universities of the country in their respective region.
Dr Mohammad Aslam Rector PIEAS said that attaining 1st position in the country while 106th in the Asian universities was made possible through formulating liberalise policy to send young people abroad for higher education which created talented faculty members and students. Several new programmes have been initiated to continue the academic growth and PhD is the most important in this regard to achieve quality education.
The PIEAS has already been ranked No1 in Engineering & Technology universities by the HEC in all the three rankings (2006, 2010, and 2013) conducted so far. PIEAS, a degree awarding institution, is one of the leading human resource development institutions of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission.
