Worsening law and order situation: KCCI to approach Prime Minister for army's deployment in Karachi
A meeting of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCI) over worsening law and order situation of the city decided to approach Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for deployment of army in Karachi to assist Rangers and police in restoration of lasting peace.
The meeting discussed the worsening law and order situation in the city and decided to take joint steps to improve the situation. Besides KCCI members, chairmen of six industrial association including Site Association of Industry Younus M Bashir, Chairman North Karachi Association of Trade and Industry (NKATI), Federal B Area Association of Trade and Industry (FBAATI) Shaikh Mohammad Tahseen, Chairman SITE Super Highway Association Mehmood Rangoonwala, Chairman Businessmen Group and Former President KCCI Siraj Kassim Teli, President KCCI Abdullah Zaki and others attended the meeting.
Sources said it was decided that the chamber would send an SOS letter to Prime Minister and demand immediate deployment of army in the city to improve law and order situation. The chamber will also request the Prime Minister to order action against unregistered prepaid SIMs being used in the country and block them forthwith. The participants were of the view that the unregistered SIMs were primary source of all crimes and if these were blocked 75 percent incidents of extortion would drop.
The meeting was informed that businessmen and industrialists were being kidnapped fearlessly and the worsening situation can be gauged from the fact that around 17 businessmen had been kidnapped during the past three months, whereas the police and rangers have failed to provide safety and security.
Criminal activities such as extortion, kidnapping and killing for ransom and decoities in the markets and industrial areas are rampant, causing widespread fear and harassment among industrialists and businessmen, they added. The meeting decided that if their demands were not met in next two weeks, it would hold a meeting and decide its future line of action which may include strike and agitation.
The business and industrial community of Karachi are supporters of democracy in the country and do not want Army to take over but at the same time they demand of the government to take action against criminals irrespective of cast, colour and creed or any political affiliations, the KCCI said. The KCCI also urged the government to use all resources at its disposal, Police, Rangers, Frontier Constabulary and Army as it is the duty of the state to provide security and safety to the life and property of its citizens and prevailing situation demands that the Army should be deployed in Karachi.
