Absence of Pakistan government's delegate at the 18th Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) which was held at Sri Lanka in the first week of June has increased chances of declining fish industry in Pakistan. According to sources, 247 delegates from 32 nations who participated in the five-day session proposed their agendas for betterment of their fish industries.
However, a number of questions remained unanswered in the absence of Pakistan government's delegation. Though observers from World Wide Fund Pakistan (WWF-P) have attended this session, but their opinion was not considered as they are not representatives of government.
It is reported that government has not furnished yearly fees of IOTC and as a result of which the IOTC has warned to discontinue Pakistan's capacity building opportunity and training sessions. An expert of WWF-P, Umair Shahid, told Business Recorder that the progress at the ocean level was low and it was important to understand the wide range of mix of countries, cultures, languages in the Indian Ocean that takes time to harmonise processes.
