Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) core committee on Wednesday empowered party chairman Imran Khan that he can direct chief minister Pervez Khattak to dissolve the provincial assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa anytime. "The chairman [Imran] has been fully authorised to take any decision regarding dissolving the KP provincial assembly if he feels it is necessary," a PTI leader told Business Recorder on a condition of anonymity.
He said the core committee had fully empowered the party chairman, adding he could issue directives to the chief executive of the province as head of the party and there was no second opinion about it.
Imran had threatened to dissolve the provincial assembly if the federal government kept on ignoring the demands of his party. The statement created ripples in political circles with opposition MPs in KP moving privilege motion against him.
The core committee meeting chaired by PTI chairman Imran Khan at his BaniGala residence maintained that the party would be forced to take to streets if the federal government turned down his party's demands.
"Our demands should not be misinterpreted as it's our democratic rights...we're demanding a vote recount in four constituencies. We've submitted documentary evidence of massive rigging and we're not going accept anything less than recounting of votes," he added.
The meeting also discussed the issue of internally displaced persons (IDPs) as about 500,000 residents of North Waziristan have arrived in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the influx of IDPs is likely to accelerate.
The committee reiterated its demand that the centre should immediately release Rs6 billion from coalition support fund (CSF) - an amount reimbursed by the US to Pakistan for the cost of counter-insurgency operations - to facilitate the displaced persons. The committee also flayed the government for the delay in releasing the funds for IDPs as it is creating problems for KP provincial government. The committee also decided that PTI volunteers will also be deputed to IDP camps to help the authorities in facilitating the displaced persons.
