Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will announce the release of outstanding salaries of Telephone Industries of Pakistan employees before Ramazan, said the Finance Ministry official. While briefing the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication, which met with Captain Muhammad Safdar (Retd) in the chair here Wednesday, the Joint Secretary said the Prime Minister would visit TI Pakistan headquarter in Haripur before Ramazan and announce the release of outstanding salaries of contract/daily wages/contingent paid employees of TI Pakistan.
The committee expressed annoyance over non-payment of salaries and absence of Secretary Establishment and Finance Division from the meeting, saying that it was contempt of the committee. The committee chairman said that TI Pakistan employees' delegation was going to meet Prime Minister on Thursday (today), however in case of non-resolution of the issue how would he face them, threatening to resign saying that it was of no use to sit here and not resolve public problems.
Safdar further said that a letter would be written to the Speaker National Assembly over the no-attention of government employees to the committee. Some committee members also exchanged harsh words with Finance Ministry officials for not paying TIP employees.
The committee was also briefed about the function/performance of the Virtual University. The Rector Virtual University said the university is Pakistan's first university, completely based on modern information and communication technologies. The university was established by the government as a public sector, not-for-profit institution with a clear mission to provide affordable world class education all over the country and abroad. The Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication decided to constitute a sub-committee to examine the matters concerning the Virtual University. The sub-committee would comprise Major Tahir Iqbal (Retd), Mehar Ishtiaq Ahmad, Syed Ali Raza Abidi, Zahra Wadood Fatemi and Engineer Dawar Khan Kundi as its members and Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari as convenor of the committee.
