The law enforcement agencies have further beefed up security in and around Benazir International Airport after a passenger flight of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) came under attack at Bacha Khan International Airport Peshawar on Tuesday night, killing a woman and injuring two others - a passenger and a flight steward.
Airport Security Force (ASF) sources said that additional contingents of rangers, police and commandos were deployed in and outside the airport, as well as on the roads leading to the airport. The security personnel were conducting strict checking of all vehicles before allowing them into the parking areas of the airport, they said.
The sources said that law enforcement agencies had also conducted a search operation in the nearby areas of the airport and strict directives had been issued to the police deployed outside the airport to be extra vigilant. Following the recent attacks, the police patrolling had been increased and strict checking of vehicles on the adjacent roads of the airport had also been ordered.
Subsequent to terrorist attacks at Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, and Bacha Khan Airport, the Ministry of Interior issued directives that security be put on high alert at all airports including Benazir Bhutto International Airport Islamabad, Allama Iqbal International Airport in Lahore, Moen Jo Daro and Nawabshah airports in interior Sindh, Quetta International Airport in Balochistan and Bacha Khan Airport in Peshawar.
Security has been put on high alert in the federal capital in the wake of fresh terror threats after the launch of military operation Zarb-e-Azb against terrorists in North Waziristan to avert any untoward incident. A police official said that additional contingents of police and rangers had been deployed at sensitive buildings including Parliament House, Presidency, Prime Minister Secretariat, Supreme Court and Secretariat. Besides this, security at weekly bazaars, hospitals, markets, mosques, Imambargahs, seminaries, big motels, schools, colleges and bus stands had been enhanced.
