The north-eastern parts of the country are expected to receive above normal rain in the monsoon season (July-September) which may result in flashfloods in some parts of the country. There will be more rains compared to last year and the flashfloods will also add to the miseries of internally displaced persons (IDPs) as a good number of about half a million people have fled their homes due to military operations in North Waziristan, said a senior official of Pakistan Meteorological Department.
The official said the floods are likely to hit some parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Charsadda, Nowshera, Hazara division and Swat, Punjab and Sindh, which may cause serious issues for the IDPs, who left their homes due to ongoing military operation in North Waziristan against militants. The floods may also damage cotton crops in Punjab and Sindh, officials added.
The PMD has also issued the outlook for monsoon season (July-September) 2014 which states; Pakistan summer monsoon rainfall is invariably affected by the global, regional and local climatic conditions prevailing prior to the season. The emerging climatic features linked to El-Nino development have fairly large potential to suppress Pakistan summer monsoon.
"Analysis of their combined effect indicates that total amount of rainfall in Pakistan during monsoon season (July-September) 2014 will remain slightly below normal, which means that overall availability of water in the country from monsoon rainfall would be satisfactory," maintained in the outlook. It further states that onset of monsoon is likely to be in the last week of June, 2014 and the rainfall during July will below normal. Rainfall will increase gradually in August over northern parts of the country.
During August and September monsoon will remain by and large normal. However, north-eastern parts of the country are expected to receive slightly above normal precipitation during the period. The monsoon 2014 outlook for predicted rainfall shows that normal to below normal precipitation is most likely in the country.
