Citizens on Monday thronged fruit and other food markets whereas the traders selling Iftari items did a roaring business on the first day of Ramazan. Traditional Iftar items such as `Samosa', `Pakora', `Dahi Phulki', `Choley', `Katchori', were in high demand. A large number of stalls and pushcarts selling dates and fruits have sprung up in all parts of the city, especially in the vicinity of mosques, offices and other public places.
Consumption and sale of dates reached its peak on the first day of Ramazan. Locally produced dates, called as `Khajji' or `Khajoor' were in high demand because of their taste and fragrance. Different varieties of dates, including `Aseel', `Karbala', `Fasli' and `Kupro' from Sindh; `Muzawati', `Begum Jangi', `Jaan Swore', `Kehraba' and `Rabai' from Balochistan; `Dhakki' and `Gulistan' from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and a seedless variety of Punjab, are available in the market. Meanwhile, fruit and vegetable-sellers are doing roaring business, charging exorbitant rates whereas those associated with garments and shoes were optimistic that their sale would go up gradually during Ramazan.
