Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has planned to launch 17 new hydel power generation projects in the next fiscal year 2014-15 to overcome with power shortage immediately. After completing these projects, KP province will generate 694 mega watts additional electricity in the financial year 2014-15.
According to the sources, Rs 3.046 billion had been allocated for 36 projects of energy and power development sector, setting aside Rs 2.8 billion for 19 ongoing projects and Rs 240.6 million for 17 new projects in the provincial Annual Development Programme 2014-15.
Power projects which will be initiated include, the construction of 300MW Balakot HPP District Manshera (10 percent equity), construction of 14MW Ghorband HPP district Shangla (10 percent equity), construction of 188MW Naran Dam district Manshera (10 percent equity), construction of 10MW Nandihar HPP district Battagram (10 percent equity), construction of 51MW Mujigaram Shaghore HPP district Chitral (10 percent equity), construction of 52MW istarobooni HPP district Chitral (10 percent equity), and construction of 79MW ArkariGol district Chitral (10 percent equity).
The provincial government will launch hydel power generation projects on short, medium and long-term basis by tapping all hydel potential with focus on gas fired or coal based power projects in private sector. In this regard 'energy taskforce' has been set up to prepare health and result-oriented proposals and recommendations, regarding power generation, electricity supply and distribution. It has also set priorities in energy sector to utilise the net hydel profits, devising comprehensive power policy framework in KP, exploration of funds through different resources including donors, DFIs, banks, private sectors, floating of shares, energy bonds etc, sources said.
Similarly a sum of Rs 7 billion has been also earmarked in provincial ADP 2014-15, to establish more than 300 power houses in Hazara and Malakand, aimed at enhancing power generation, supporting the feeble economy and creating job creation in the province, sources added.
According to budget documents, federal government is liable to payout 140 billion rupees on head of power dues of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, due to delaying in payment, has been badly affecting development and economy of the province. KP government has decided to transfer 10 percent share of net hydel profits receivable from Wapda and federal government which would be utilised on development activities, like technical education, health, facilities, roads, scholarship for the affectees, water supply schemes, sources mentioned.
