The Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation increased by 8.22 percent during June 2014, as compared to the same period of last year, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) revealed. Chief Statistician, PBS, Asif Bajwa addressing a press conference on Tuesday said CPI inflation witnessed an increase of 8.62 percent in July-June 2013-14 over July-June 2012-13, while it increased by 0.61 percent in June 2014 over May 2014.
According to monthly inflation report released by the PBS in June 2014, the CPI increased by 0.61 percent, Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) and Wholesale Price Index (WPI) increased by 1.11 percent and 1.37 percent, respectively. The PBS collected the retail and wholesale prices and computed the CPI, WPI on monthly basis while SPI on weekly basis. Analysis of the CPI data released by the PBS showed that prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages soared to 6.13 percent during June 2014, over the same period last year and prices of non-perishable food items recorded an increase of 5.29 percent, while perishable food items rose by 11.09 percent.
The cost of alcoholic beverages and tobacco increased by 33.2 percent during the period under review, clothing and footwear 10.99 percent, housing, water, electricity, gas and fuels 9.62 percent, furnishing and household equipment maintenance 9.83 percent, health 7.37 percent, transport 4.28 percent, communication 0.89 percent, recreation and culture 6.13 percent, education 16.73 percent, restaurant and hotels 13.35 percent while prices of miscellaneous items surged by 6.29 percent.
About the core inflation of CPI, Bajwa said trimmed core inflation was observed as 7.9 percent during June 2014 over June 2013, while it was 6.8 percent during June 2013 over June 2012. He maintained that the non-food and non-energy core inflation was observed at 8.7 percent during June 2014 over the same period last year, while it stood at 7.8 percent during June 2013 over June 2012.
The food and non-food items that witnessed significant increase in their prices during June 2014 over June 2013 included: potatoes (138.70 percent), pulse Moong (34.39 percent), cigarettes (33.61 percent), pulse Masoor (17.06 percent), milk powder (16.11 percent), fresh fruits (15.23 percent), condiments (13.76 percent), wheat products (13.68 percent), readymade food (13.35 percent), postal service (23.25 percent), education (16.73 percent), electricity (15.82 percent), cotton cloth (14.43 percent), doctor fee (14.29 percent), woolen readymade garments (13.45 percent), readymade garments (13.29 percent) and tailoring (13.16 percent).
He said food and non-food items that witnessed significant increase in their prices during July-June 2013-14 over July-June 2012-13 included: potatoes (70.23 percent), tomatoes (24.72 percent), postal services (24.41 percent), wheat (20.26 percent), onions (19.63 percent), wheat flour (19.52 percent), wheat products (18.76 percent), cigarettes (17.10 percent), pulse Moong (16.82 percent), cosmetics (16.59 percent), and pulse masoor (15.86 percent).
The food and non-food items that witnessed significant rise in their prices during June 2014 over May 2014 included: tomatoes (60.22 percent), cigarettes (16.18 percent), pulse Mash (3.61 percent), sugar (3.44 percent), potatoes (3.26 percent), spices (2.79 percent), beverages (2.55 percent), milk powder (2.36 percent), Gur (2.03 percent), pulse Moong (1.98 percent), eggs (1.64 percent), milk products (1.58 percent), condiments (1.56 percent), milk fresh (1.43 percent), household servant (2.52 percent), cotton cloth (2.22 percent), marriage hall charges (1.46 percent), education (1.15 percent), sewing needle & dry cell (1.12 percent), hosiery (1.07 percent), mechanical services (0.96 percent) and tailoring (0.92 percent).
