The Board of Directors of Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organisation (PEDO) during its second meeting on Tuesday decided to construct 356 micro hydel stations having power generation capacity of 35MW through NGOs in various parts of the province to be utilised at community based process. During the meeting it was also decided to boost the pace of work on various ongoing energy projects of oil, gas, thermal and hydel that have been started through utilisation of provincial based natural resources in order to make the province as "Energy Hub".
In this context, various committees have been constituted in order to remove the hurdles being faced by various ongoing energy projects in the province. The meeting was also attended by Secretary Energy and Power Sahibzada Saeed Khan, Additional Secretary Finance, Khan Zeb, Sardar Mohammad Tariq, Zahidullah Shinwari, Nauman Wazir and Secretary Board and GM PEDO, Engineer Bahadur Shah.
During the meeting, Saeed Khan gave a detailed presentation to the board members regarding the ongoing energy projects, work pace and problems facing during the implementation. He further said that as per the vision of change of current provincial government, it has been decided to construct 356 community based micro hydel stations through NGOs with the total cost of Rs 4700 million from Hydel Development Funds (HDF).
These mini-stations will be constructed in Abbottabad, Mansehra, Batagram, Tor Ghar, Kohistan, Malakand, Buner, Swat, Shangla, Dir (Uper/Lower) and Chitral having total capacity of 35MW and so far six local NGOs have shown interest to develop these projects. The board further approved to develop these micro hydel stations through these firms. Moreover, the board has given approval of the decisions made by the apex committee of energy sector to start up the large capacity of hydropower projects in the province.
